In the Democratic Republic of Congo, unforeseen political, economic, and social shifts can change life in an instant. Tattoos, on the other hand, are meant to be permanent, stuck on one’s skin regardless of wars or coups. While tattoos are generally considered a taboo in Congolese society, the designs share the stories of their bearers.
